Magnetophotonic crystals are nano-scaled composite magneto-optical materials with one-, two- or three-dimensional artifical structures. The author presents the fabrication and properties of the new class of nano-scaled materials with magnetic garnet materials as well as the applications of the one-dimensional case such as magneto-optical spatial light modulators and film-based optical isolators. In addition, magnetically-induced non-linear optical and magneto-optical properties of the magnetophotonic crystals are also described based upon the experimental results.
